What Goes Around Comes Around

On January 1st 2013, Patrick was heading to a job interview. As he was walking down the tarmac road, he saw a lady who was stranded on the side of the road. Although Patrick was running late, he decided to see if he could offer any help to the lady. As he approached her, the lady got back into her BMW M5 and rolled up the window.

Even with a smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last two hours or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe; he looked hungry and poor. Patrick could see that she was scared. It was those jitters which only fear can put in you. Patrick said, “I am here to help Madam. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Patrick.”

All she had was a flat tire but for a senior citizen, that was bad enough. He crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt.

As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from Eldoret and she had a business meeting in Nakuru. She could not thank him enough for coming to her aid.

Patrick just smiled as he closed the trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been fine with her. She had already imagined all awful things that could have happened had Patrick not stopped. Patrick never thought twice about being paid, that was not a job to him. It was helping someone in need and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way and it never occurred to him to act any other way.

Patrick told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that assistance and Patrick added, “Think of me”. He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been cold and depressing time but he felt good as he headed for the job interview, disappearing into the daybreak.

45 minutes later, Patrick showed up for his job interview. As he walked into the interview room. Among the interviewees was the lady he had help along the way. All she did was to smile at him. After the interview, the lady asked Patrick to wait for her in the CEO office. After some few minutes. The lady come in holding a job offer letter and handed it to Patrick and said, “If you really want to thank me, help someone whenever you can and Think of me”. They both smiled.

The moral of the story is: do good and good things will come back to you. Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about, help those in need, whenever you can. Always be kind.

There is an old saying that says, “Making one person smile can change the world, maybe not the whole world, but their world.” Smile, PASS IT ON, the world needs your smile.
